1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

as a bridge for cross-culturalcommunication, translation is not only a translation of language but also atranslation of culture. eugene nida, a translation theorist, points out that “familiarity with two cultures is even moreimportant than mastering two languages for truly successful translations”, it is because words are only meaningful inthe context of their role. for a long time, english songs translation has beenconsidered as a hot topic in translation. compared to other text translations, englishsongs translation shows a great deal of particularity. this particularity islargely due to the interdisciplinary nature of song translation. thetranslation works that combine “sound beauty”, “form beauty” and “emotionalbeauty”, which are not only require the translator to master the knowledge ofboth the translation and music disciplines, but also require the translator hasthe ability to integrate the two as a harmonious whole. therefore, many peoplethink that songs are not good or even untranslatable. there is little researchon the translation skills and strategies of songs, and the lack of theoreticalresults has further increased the difficulty of song translation. yet, thankfully, with the development of cultural translation, the term 'culturaladaptation theory' was applied to the field of translation, and translationscholars gave corresponding explanations to the term. lefebvre considers ‘adaptation’ as a kind of ‘refraction’ in his article “translating literature: an exploration ofcomprehensive theory”. 'reflection' refers to the adaptation ofliterary works to suit different readers, with the purpose of influencing theway in which the target language readers read the work (lefevere andre, 1981). besides, many domestic scholars also have akeen interest in cultural adaptation theory. hu gengshen pointed out in the“translation theory from the terminology: anoverview of translation adaptation and selection theory” that “translating is a cyclical process in which the translator constantlyadapts and optimizes his choice”. adaptationof course also includes cultural adaptation. in a great extent, culturaladaptation plays a crucial role in cultural translation. to achieve cultural “fax” and meet the reader's ability to accept, it is necessary to makecultural adjustments to the original work. the study of cultural adaptation isextremely important for enriching and supplementing cultural translation andhas important practical significance.

nowadays, english songs translation did not get equality attentions likeliterature translation, poems translation or movie translation. a majority oftranslators focus less on songs translation than others for its superiordifficulty and unsystematic, which directly leads to the declining of songstranslation’s industry. in recent five years, the number of academic papers ofenglish songs translation are less than 300. however, songs also play animportant role to promote the mutual understanding among all nationalities likeother genre, what’s more, songs play a unique and irreplaceable role in foreignculture exchanges, reflecting the cultures and customs of different ethnicgroups(何高大,陈水平,2009:130). therefore, the focus of thispaper is to discuss the importance of songs translation on cultural exchangeand transmission, and attempt to explain why cultural adaptation theory couldcreate a more reasonable and feasible methods of songs translation.

thepurpose of the paper is to emphasize the importance of english songstranslation and to analyze how cultural adaptation theory both perfects englishsongs translation and spread chinese traditional culture, so that the readerswould have a better understanding of english songs translation and culturaladaptation theory.
