China is known as a country where English is learned as a foreign language and is a pillar of the educational system. Therefore, English is an indispensable course for most of the Chinese students. However, under the influence of Chinese culture, grammar, and thinking mode, Chinglish was born and has become a common phenomenon.
Chinglish is a kind of ungrammatical or nonsensical English in Chinese contexts, and may have pejorative or deprecating connotations. It has been widely used in China, especially being a very common problem in college English writing and displaying in various ways.
As China grows stronger and more influential, the international communications China is involved in are much more than ever before, and it is important for the country to output its culture and values. It can be concluded that English is a part of Chinese people's lives, but it is Chinglish that most of Chinese are really using.
Through international culture exchanges, English native speakers have noticed the Chinglish phenomenon, and have even been confused as well as mocked at some typical Chinglish. However, with great importance western countries have attached to China, part of Chinglish are gradually accepted by English world——just like “add oil”,a typical Chinglish expression, has been included by Oxford English Dictionary.
Thus, some media begin to take pride in using Chinglish and recommend that Chinglish is unavoidable and we had better take advantage of it to convey and spread Chinese culture. However, what they regard as Chinglish is in effect China English; Chinglish is a kind of misshapen, hybrid language, and there are many Chinglish errors in college English writing. Hence, just as important as using grammatically-correct authentic Chinese, we should learn and use the Standard English, not only for deep international communications, but the further understanding of the English culture and thinking mode.
Although researchers abroad pay more attention to China English for they represent Chinese culture, the analysis on Chinglish are rarer, because most foreigners just think of it as a kind of fun or mistake, not a subject worth researching.
However, there are also scholars who have lived in China or learn Chinese language and culture for ages, so they noticed the sophisticated features Chinglish has and gave constructive suggestions and guidance according to that problem. For instance, Kingsley Bolton has written A Sociolinguistic History, which shows us the development history of English in China. The book provides us with a unique method to analyse Chinglish from the perspective of history. Another example is The Translator’s Guide to Chinglish written by Joan Pinkham, a famous American translator who has been responsible for revising the translations of Chinese leaders' works just like Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and so on. In this book, we can see the main Chinglish features and categories, and know how to avoid making similar mistake.
During recent decades of years, Chinese scholars and researchers have become conscious of the importance of Chinglish problems, and they set out to do pertinent analysis and continually refine the English teaching methods. Most of their works are in form of paper, and the examples they take advantage of are from existing material and some even lack research subjects. It means that most researches on Chinglish are lacking in depth and accuracy.
Accordingly, the paper will be based on the experience and knowledge concluded form the works at home and abroad, and most importantly, the author will take the Chinese college students English writing as the subjects to discuss the question and make a further analysis.
