D.H. Lawrence is a famous British novelist and poet in the 20th century. The Rocking-Horse winner is one of Lawrence's famous short stories in his later years. The social background of this novel was the period of western industrial civilization. The novel reveals the endless greed and pursuit of money and material, which makes the harmonious relationships between people become cold and distorted. In this novel, the little boy Paul is eager to get his mother's love, but the extreme greed for money and material comfort occupies his mother’s heart, which makes her lost the ability to love and attach to her children. As a result, Paul did not hesitate to exchange his life for money.
In the previous researches, Chinese scholars focused on the issue of the Oedipus complex, and explored the personalities of characters or the writing skills and methods of this novel. For example, Qiu Yun and Lin Xia(2008) pointed out that the money and material desire distort and alienate the mind of Paul’s mother and the social environment is the source of this mother’s image. And Xu Xinyang interpreted the narrative techniques and themes of this novel by analyzing the two images of wooden horse and horse racing. However, most western scholars focus on the Paul’s character development from the perspective of Paul’s nature and belief;some of them also focus on how Paul's relation affects his character development and the influence of social environment. For example, Theodore Dreiser and Urban Naturalism(2011) analyzed the similarities and differences between Sister Carrie and Paul's mother in the article The Rocking Horse Winners in American Novel.
From the above, the Chinese and foreign scholars have studied Paul’s unpredictable life through the way of analyzing the figures development and other factors. To date, although these researchers include many aspects, they also exist some deficiencies in current researches. The current researches focus more on the social background which has influenced the development of Paul and his mother, not many of them analyze Lawrence’s childhood experience and the relationship with his own mother, which also affected his writing.
In my paper, I will use the theory of psychoanalytic criticism to interpret the significance and values it reflected. Only if we have a full analysis of the author can we get more information about Paul and his mother. This study is of educational significance. Attachment quality of early children will have different effects on children's development, especially on social development. And this influence is not only realistic, but also long-term. It constructs the characteristics of life-long adaptation of infants, so as to make infants better adapt to the direction of survival. The attachment between Paul's mother and Paul is the kind of ambivalent attachment, and this abnormal attachment is one of the causes of Paul's death. Therefore, parents should create a good environment and conditions for raising children, improve their attachment quality, and promote the healthy development of children's personality and sociality. In Lawrence’s popular works, he is not only good at depicting the adult world of “sex and beauty”, but also good at describing the psychology of children. These works represent an extended reflection on the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour. Studying his work can help us to research the English literature and understand the living situation at that time, spiritual world and modern western civilization.
