When reading an English article, even if you don't have any knowledge about the author,or the background of the article, the words and expressions in the article will make it become easy to be distinguished since those expressions are written different from native English author and non-native English author. Although the sentences by non-native authors are fluent and without grammatical errors, the distinction of the articles still exists. So how the difference in the terminology used by people to be identified? Why are the articles of non-native English-speaking authors who are proficient in English vocabulary and grammar different from those of native English authors? Brief analysis of different use of the English expressions in the event of China-US trade war
1 Introduction
Due to the rapid development of mass media communication technology, it is easier for us to learn about what is happening in our country or even in the world. With the development of information technology and the growing importance of international diplomatic relations, English news is not only for the students who study English and some overseas Chinese. Today, many foreign media will focus and pay attention to China's news in order to figure out the attitude of China via the news written by Chinese people especially those news writing in English.
For many readers, it is not difficult to tell whether an article is written by a native English speaker. So how did they distinguish them? What is the stylistic differences between a news report written by a Chinese writer and an article written by a native English speaker? There have been many studies on the differences between Chinese English newspaper and American English newspapers. For example, based on the corpus, Gong Junyang has researched on the English words used in "China Daily" political news in order to find the differences in the vocabulary level and grammatical level of the political news in FLOB (Freiburg-LOB corpus of British English). Surprisingly, the vocabulary density of China Daily is greater than FLOB, and the usage of words in China Daily is more complicated.
Today, China-US trade war is in full swing, and major media update their reports on the latest developments in trade wars almost every day. These situations have provided good conditions with massive articles for this study.
This study has it significant meaning. In the process of English learning, those differences are clear and are likely to trigger to enormous English learning problems.
First of all, the different habits of using terminology in the article may lead to the difficulty of reaching the audience in other countries when they read the article written by the domestic authors and it is also hard for them to fully understand the main ideas in the article and enable the article to resonate with these special people. At the same time, domestic authors' articles are also difficult to attract oversea Chinese audiences and foreigners and the articles are difficult to be recognized by them. Only by analyzing the different habits of the usage of words in the articles of the same event by domestic and foreign authors, and changing the Chinglish expressions from Chinese authors can foreign audiences understand the news smoothly.
Secondly, through analysis and understanding of the differences in the article, English learners can intuitively recognize the differences between Chinese thinking and foreign thinking patterns. Furthermore, the misunderstanding caused by Chinese thinking can be found and understood by English learners who may fall into these errors in writing articles in English. This is very important for future language learning since after learning these common misunderstandings, English learners can be more effective in avoiding the problems of Chinese English, so that the English used by learners can be more pure. Finally, after fully understanding the English thinking and the common mistakes that Chinese English learners may make in the writing of the article, these English learners can truly master the international language of English.
Finally, the analysis of the different degrees of the use of words in the same event at home and abroad can make domestic people more aware of the different attitudes of authors at home and abroad for the same event. Thus, English learners can understand the political position of foreigners more clearly and help them in reading comprehension of foreigners’ attitude.
After analyzing and understanding the differences in the writing of these articles, English learners can understand more deeply the differences in terminology between the two sides. This is very helpful for the writing and understanding of English articles. Thereby, it also can promote communication at home and abroad, and reduce misunderstandings that may arise in communication due to differences in terminology.
2 Analysis of the three news media
2.1 China Daily
First of all, as China's window for Chinese people to understand the world and for the world to understand China, China Daily plays a crucial role as a news media and has its own characteristics. China Daily was founded on June 1st, 1981. In the design of the newspaper, the international trendy design is used to create a modern visual boutique. The contents of the newspaper are various news from major news inside China and major news from the world. Its audiences are mainly well educated people from many domains, such as domestic politics, business, English learning, foreigners working, visiting, studying, and traveling in China. It is also attract the foreigners, such as diplomatic envoys in China, representatives of international organizations, senior executives of multinational corporations, and media practitioners.
Because of its audiences, the articles of China Daily will certainly be different from the articles in the general newspaper. After all, the articles in China Daily are for those who have received higher education which are essentially different from the general newspapers’ articles that target the general public. (e.g. Withdrawing from international treaties, building border walls and starting trade wars, the United States seems to be intent on reconstructing the postwar international order that it built itself. )Moreover, since the article is a window for the world to understand China, it should display the Chinese characteristics in its narrative style. However, as an objective newspaper, China Daily must describe the news from an objective perspective. Fortunately, in the comments section, China Daily still has its space to show its own attitude and its own characteristics.
