Translation has always been the focus of attention tolinguistic scholars at home and abroad. In China, E-C translation has a timehonoured history. From the introduction of western to China's socialistmodernization, the cultural communication between China and foreign haspromoted the process of translation. And the development of translation ,accordingly, has provided a solid foundation for cross-culture communication.Over the years, forming a complete skills and theory of translation as guide,the domestic E-C translation is becoming more and more mature. Nevertheless,English and Chinese belong to two distinct linguistic system after all, whichreflects two different cultural system. Cultural diversity, as a considerablepart of translation, leads to "untranslatability" during the courseof E-C translation, which becomes the chief obstacle of literal translation. Itis the cultural conflicts that causes the problem. Translation is not onlycross-language communicative activity, but cross-culture activity as well. Inthe practice of specific translation, if the translator were confused aboutcultural knowledge of target language and source language, if he did not knowhow to avoid cultural conflicts and remove cultural barriers, then histranslation would become obscure, failing to express the original meaning thatthe writer wanted to show, which leads to the failure of cross-culture communication.For instance, chinglish is a common mistake in the process of translation whichmeans the translator uses the wrong rules of language on English that wassupposed to be used on Chinese. Writing the unfit English due to he wasobstructed by Chinese thing logic and cultural background. Therefore , how todeal with the problem caused by cultural conflicts is what the scholars at homeand abroad have to face.
In last century, Chinese noted translator Yan Fu hadbriefly crystallized the standards of translation -fidelity, fluency andelegance. There is also a solution to above problem proposed by Americantranslation theorist Lawrence Venuti. In his book translator's invisibility theconcept of foreignization and domestication was put forward for the first time.Foreignization requires translator tries his best to keep writer's sourcelanguage, which holds the belief that it is necessary to show the culturalconflicts very fully so that the words can stay in its original state. Thestyle and feature of the source language will not change. On the contrary,domestication focus on making the translation "indigenization".Rewriting the sentences that target readers are hard to understand toaccessible sentences, eliminating cultural conflicts, translator should makethe language adapt to reader's cultural environment.
As the representativework of depiction that reflects the contradiction and conflict between AmericanChinese culture, the Joy Luck Club and its Chinese version deserve detailedstudy. By means of describing the intergenerational relationship, Amy Tan definedChinese and American culture to the core. Like wise, Chen Naishan's Chineseversion also did the good job who provided a perfect material for the researchof E-C translation. Taking the translation of Loy Luck Club by Chen Naishan2010 as the example, this paper focus on the research of cultural conflicts andhow it influences E-C translation, concluding the problems that appears duringthe course of translation and aiming to find the approaches to it.{title}
