This paper mainly focuses on cultural default and its translation compensation strategies from the perspective of relevance theory in the Chinese translation of The Chinese Maze Murders. The first part briefly introduces relevance theory and its application to translation. In light of relevance theory, the body part analyzes in detail the Chinese translation of culturally defaulted elements and its compensation strategies. In addition, several compensation strategies used in tackling culture default are put forward under the relevance-theoretic framework.
