Chinese culture is extensive, profound, and has a long history. As the saying goes “民以食为天” shows the importance of food culture in Chinese culture. Chinese cuisine has a long history of thousands of years, with a variety of flavors and distinctive features. With the development of globalization and the popularity of the documentary "A Bite of China", more and more foreigners come to China to taste Chinese food while Chinese food also goes abroad through various channels. In this context, how to translate Chinese dishes names to English accurately has undoubtedly become the highest priority of promoting Chinese food culture.
Based on the perspectives of Skopos Theory, Functional Equivalence Theory, Cross-Cultural Communication Theory and Interpretive Theory, strategies and methods for C-E translation of Chinese dish names in A Bite of China are explored. Through consulting materials and translation practice, the relationships among translation theories, translation strategies and translation methods are summarized.
